As the big day approaches Nicholas and his father venture out to purchase the family Christmas tree. After choosing their beautiful tree they are then given a taste of the tree lot owner's greed, so Nicholas decides instead to bring home a tiny tree that would surely have been left on the lot long after Christmas was over. That night Nicolas is awakened by a strange crying sound. As he tiptoes down the stairs he discovers that his little tree is now large and beautiful and glowing with a glorious golden hue. The tree asks Nicholas to help the other smaller trees by making sure that hey have a home for Christmas before they are left on the lot to wilt away without bringing joy to anyone.
