The events of this story took place during the American Civil War between North and South. The novel expresses slavery that tarnished the reputation of the white man who exploited the weakness of his fellow man to the benefit of his ambitions. The novel also talks about the great injustice that Native Americans, the original owners of the land, suffered when they were expelled from their homeland to exploit it for the benefit of the white man.
